We would like to remind all of our students of the importance of walking in pairs or groups, calling Safe Rides, or using our shuttle services.

Once again, the burden is placed (this time by my university, but also by society at large) on women to prevent their own assaults. Rather than implementing a campus-wide discussion on what consent means, my university manages to subtly blame the victim within her own police report - why were you travelling alone? Why didn’t you call Safe Rides?

I’m not saying that this is just a problem at my university - obviously it isn’t. This is just a manifestation of rape culture within my own bubble. It’s a reminder that we need to continue to fight rape culture in our own communities and stop blaming victims for the actions of their attacker. We need to stop telling women to travel in groups, and start telling men to get consent, and that no or I’m not sure or leave me alone or anything but yes means NO.

Wow, did I really just read a comment saying that Dan Humphrey is worse than Chuck Bass?

Listen up, folks. Call Dan Humphrey an asshole, call him whatever the fuck you want, I don’t really give a shit. Most of my investment in Dan/Blair is on behalf of Blair, who deserves to be happy, and who obviously derives happiness and comfort from their relationship. Dan is judgmental. Dan is insensitive. Dan is a douchebag. Fine. I may not agree, I may think he’s gotten better because of his relationship with Blair, but I am not arguing with you.

Chuck Bass is an attempted rapist. Chuck Bass, upon learning that Blair was engaged to another man, tried to punch her - he missed, breaking a window, and cutting her face. Chuck Bass views women as property that can be bought and sold and traded for his own business interests. Chuck Bass is a despicable human being, and the fact that he got a dog and apologized for ‘losing his temper’ does not negate his past actions. I know that these facts aren’t convenient for your ship, but they’re true. I know that it’s just a television show, but portraying Chuck Bass as a redeemable romantic hero is just irresponsible, especially considering the target audience of this show.

I know that this is Gossip Girl and everyone is horrible and thus we’re operating within mostly very dark shades of grey. But please, please do not even try to make this argument, because it’s wrong, and it’s gross.

redhead-monster:

Okay, forget everything I have ever complained about or told you to do, politically. Forget if you don’t read political posts. Stop. WATCH/READ THIS RIGHT NOW.

For those of you who for some reason cannot or do not want to watch the video, allow me to summarize. Right now there is a law that has passed the Virginia legislature that would mandate a trans-vaginal ultrasound for anyone seeking an abortion. No exceptions.

Now that in and of itself does not sound so scary, right? Wrong. A trans-vaginal ultrasound is not a normal type of ultrasound. It is an ultrasound that is taken by sticking a probe into a woman’s vagina. And it is completely and totally medically unnecessary. The Republican legislators who have passed this bill admit to it being completely medically unnecessary. It exists for the sole purpose of discouraging women from getting abortions.

I honestly could care less what your personal views on abortion are, but here’s something we have to get straight right now: no matter how you feel about abortion or why, this is government-mandated rape. Think I’m exaggerating? Let’s look at how rape is defined by the federal government of the United States of America:

“The penetration, no matter how slight, of the vagina or anus with any body part or object, or oral penetration by a sex organ of another person, without the consent of the victim.”

(source)

Let’s re-iterate here: there are no exceptions. It doesn’t matter if you are getting an abortion one week or eight months into your pregnancy. You will be forcibly probed. It doesn’t matter if you are aborting for personal reasons or because it’s a medical necessity for either your safety or the safety of your child. You will be forcibly probed. It doesn’t matter if you are fourteen or forty. You will be forcibly probed. It does not matter if your child is the product of incest or even the product of rape. You will be forcibly probed.

Now, I don’t live or vote in Virginia. Technically, there is nothing I can do about this. But currently this bill is on the way to the governor’s desk, and the only hope there is of it not becoming law is if Virginia citizens contact the Governor and tell him about their opposition to him signing this into law. (Contact information is here. Please note that calling generally carries more weight than e-mailing does.)

Please re-blog this story. E-mail it to everyone you know. Tell them to e-mail it to everyone they know. Eventually, some of these people we all know should be from Virginia, and if you are from Virginia, you need to let your voice be heard now. Regardless of if you think life begins at conception, there is no justification, ever, for the government mandating the rape of women.

As sombody who has had one of these for a valid medical reason, I find this APPALLING. Speaking only from personal experience, it was invasive and uncomfortable on more than just a physical level. This is government sanctioned rape, and anyone who tells you otherwise is lying.

leatherpumpkin:thatisoffensive:

sometimes i am genuinely curious and horrified that on tumblr people will flip 100000 shits of a character is a rapist or attempted rapist but nobody bats a fucking eyelash if they are a mass murderer and if they are both the body count isn’t even important OH NO THEY RAPED A GIRL aaaaaaand killed 8 people but whatvs u no

i mean i say this as a lover of villains so obviously i am not like YOU CAN’T LIKE PEOPLE WHO DO BAD THINGS but the trend around here that rape is the ultimate crime and murder is kinda like selling pot out of your college dorm is kinda fucked up and unsettling

I AM HORRIFIED RN AND I CAN’T

I CANNOT

SOMEONE ELSE TAKE THIS

BECAUSE I CANNOT

Wait, seriously?

Let’s talk. Because as far as I know, no one speaking out against rape, rape culture, and/or rapists has ever claimed that murder is equivalent to “selling pot out of your college dorm”. Murder is a heinous act. But that’s the thing - murder is recognized in society as a heinous crime. Nobody ever says that a murder victim was asking for it. Nobody ever asks why they were out at night, or why they were wearing clothes that were basically asking for murder, or why they talked to their murderer, or why they were drinking when they got murdered. No one would think to let a murderer walk free because well, the victim was being rude and just asking to be murdered! What was the poor murderer supposed to do!

Rape victims, on the other hand, are left to deal with a society that blames them for the crime committed against them. Why were you wearing that? Why were you drinking? Why were you out alone at night? Why did you leave your drink alone and let yourself get drugged? Rape culture is one in which a survivor is told that their rape was their fault. That they shouldn’t have talked to their attacker, or kissed him, or been drunk, or been wearing certain clothes, or doing certain things. And that is highly fucked up.

The blame for rape can only ever be placed upon the rapist, just as the blame for murder can only be placed on the murderer. Unfortunately, our society doesn’t necessarily agree with the first statement. So the voices speaking out against rapists might be louder than those speaking out against murderers because we have some faith in our justice system that they will prosecute those who have killed others to the fullest extent of their capabilities. Whereas I have very little faith in rape cases being properly investigated and prosecuted, because too often the police are caught up in this rape culture that says that the victim should have tried harder not to get raped. That’s why we’re louder. Not because murder isn’t serious - it absolutely is. But rape is an equally serious crime, and it isn’t always treated that way.

If you guys could see some of the comments on these Men Can Stop Rape posters I posted.

Every single time I see another victim-blaming, “friendzone”-mentioning, misogynistic-as-fuck reblog, it takes everything in my power to not respond.

"I think it’s odd that you can’t joke about rape, when people joke about murder all the time. A lot more people are dying than getting raped. I think it’s a comedian’s job to make everything funny. Nothing is off-limits."  -

Donald Glover (via witch-or-not)

All right, I’m returning to this (with statistics!) because I’m so fucking pissed.

Donald Glover,

One in six American women will experience attempted rape or rape in their lifetime. One in thirty-three American men will. Recently, you did a sold-out show on my campus, in an auditorium that holds about 750 students. I’m not going to do the numbers for you, but you can bet your ass that there was at least one survivor in that venue. Actually, there was definitely more than one. Guess what? You just made a joke out of one of the most terrifying, violating, and heinous experiences of his or her life. Feel like a comedian now?

Did you know that 60% of sexual assaults go unreported, and that only one in sixteen rapists will ever face jail time?

Every time you make a joke about rape, you make a joke of the people who have experienced it. You give them reason not to report their assault, because it’s a fucking joke to you, so it probably is to everyone else too, right? The fact that it’s acceptable to joke about rape is the reason why so many rapists walk free. Because low-lifes like you think it’s okay to trivialize it - oh, hey, it’s no big deal, we can all laugh about it. Even worse, by joking about rape, you make any rapist sitting in the audience think that his actions are okay. That they’re not such a big deal. Most rapists don’t attack strangers. So there could be a guy sitting in your audience who hears your joke and thinks hey, when I gave that girl a few too many drinks last weekend and then had sex with her while she was drunk out of her mind, that was no big deal. Maybe I’ll do it again next weekend. No big! It’s funny! Comedians think it’s funny!

You, Donald Glover, when you make light of rape, both trigger survivors in the audience and legitimize perpetrators who hear your jokes. You also act like a complete fucking douchebag. Be a responsible adult and think before you joke next time, okay? Some things are off-limits.
